Yup.

Best dp? 1 & 36. They started and ended with a bang. Everything in between is just filler*. Really though, its hard to argue against those two. What are your favorites, and dare I ask, LEAST favorites?

The 1st one (Dec 73) and the 6th (Oct 83) have been the ones I revisit the most.

Ha, now I was going to check out DP18 and 23 and they're not available. Only about half of them are still in stock, and most I either have or don't want. Looks like a visit to a used CD store is in order.

The ones I have are very good, though. I would say 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 14, and 16 are all incredible.

I have all of the Dicks Picks, though I admittedly have not listened to every note all the way through, esp. the ones from the '80s and beyond. My favorites do vary a bit, but these are the ones I find consistently to be the best:

1, 2, 3, 4, 8, 12, 14, 16, 18, 19, 22, 28, 29, 31, 34, 36

I think my top 5 are:

2, 8, 28, 31, and 36

I only have 7 or 8 of the 36. of those, #8 and #15 are the ones that get the most play for me. #10 is a good one also.
I just got #20 fom the library. That one is pretty good and I'll be getting #22 from the library soon, so I'm looking forward to hearing that one.

Least favourite: most definitely #9 (1990-09-16).

My most-listened-to ones tend to be the earlier releases - and I much prefer the earler cover designs as well, for that matter.

Some favourites:

#4 1970-02-13/14: Every note from Dark Star to end;
#14 1973-11-30,12-02 Disk 4 Playing through Stella Blue;
#1 1973-12-19: Here Comes Sunshine;
#12 1974-06-26/28: China-Rider;
#7 1974-09: Dark Star;
#3 1977-05-22; almost everything;
#13 1981-05-06: hidden Scarlet-Fire, He's Gone-Caution Jam

wow. could it be JUST me who thinks DP one is incredibly disappointing? First of all the mix is kinda clunky I think. Second, a few minute long Other One from 73? Who wouldnt MUCH rather hear a long spacy 73 Other One sandwich ( the way they played that tune a lot in 73 ) like 11-14? The Here Comes Sunshine is good but was never one of my favorites and I'd put 2-15-73 as better myself and that's a way better show imo. Guess what I'm saying is compared to what else 73 has to offer I'm not feeling this one and if you're not going to put out the entire show wtf does Around and Around need to be on it for?

'fraid so ;)

I find DP 1 to be quite excellent, and the HCSS is likely the best ever! 2-15-73 is great but cannot touch this one imho.

You're not alone, I find this pick dull as well although, I do come back for the HCS, nobody's fault, and a smokin big river

I'm pretty sure the main reason that show got picked over others is because of the HCS. At least I recall reading dick say that.

I agree the other one is too short, the following jam however is incredibly scary and awesome. Its a decent pick, no where near the best though.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: wtf deniro, another best of thread!?

I dont have a top 3. I love the song too much. And there are so many versions that get "there".

how about under the radar?
1992-03-23 is a stellar dew and I've never seen it mentioned.
1985-11-02 is killer and the following throwing stones is amazing (and i pretty much hate the song)
1979-11-08 (road trips 1) is also really firery with phil launching bombs, but its very short. Still great though.
Same story with 1978-04-15 (both are the only dews of their year)

I wish I could give you an answer but I cant. I really prefer 72 dews overall (i'd prob pick 9/21, 10/18 and 11/13 as my favs from the year, but thats at this moment in space time), i think they got it best there.

Though the dews performed on 1976-12-31, 1977-05-08/22 are really amazing and a certain pinnacle in the playing of this song.

You said three right?

interesting. imo they reached their peak with dew in '74. '73 is my 2nd favorite year for dews, followed by '72(09/21 is my favorite, with 05/18 close behind). my all-time favorite version is probably 1974-02-24.

also from '74: 06-18, 09-10, and 10-18 are 3 of my favorite versions ever.

and from '73: 11-17, 11-30, 02-28, 08-01, 10-19, 06-10, and 09-11 are all top 15 or top 20 versions in my book. i hope you've heard all the ones i've mentioned.

Well in general its all about 72-74 dews. I love that sound so I'm with ya, I just prefer 72 out of those years. Part of it might be that there are just short of 3 times as many dews played in 72 than in 74.

I agree with you about your 74 picks. I've never been able to figure out which i think is best from this year, it always switches.

For 73, My favorites are 2/28, 11/10 and 12/2. I still have some digging to do for this year though.

Thats hard to pick.

DP 18 is an all time favorite, some of the music played on those three discs is as good as it gets.

I love DP 23 as well, I couldn't live without that other one. Its also got my favorite mamu. Among other solid performances. And yes, DP 36 is legendary. They're all great.

May I give some praise for DP 32. An all time favorite LIG. The china > rider is superb. Music > sugaree > music. classic mamu > big river. Great release.

I'm with you Wisconsin, 18 is my favorite, 23 a close second (also my favorite mamu). Least favorite, #19, nothing really stands out except that last disc.

Nice!

Yea DP 18 is just out of this world good. A younger friend of mine couldn't believe the scarlet > fire jam when he heard it last week.

And isn't that MAMU a rocker? I love it with bobby coming in ripping from the start. An excellent performance. And a jazzy/spaced out other one that pales all other versions like. Everything is really great though, playin, china rider, etc.

DP 19, its pretty decent though I do hear ya a bit. Its never grabbed me like it has for some others, or like other DPs have to me. Go take a listen to DP 27 and lemme know how 19 sounds ;)

DP 30 is probably my least fav./listened to. I've yet to be blown away from anything on that release. Anyone with suggestions?

What I like most about that mamu is the very last spooky chord from the guitars and piano, they never really achieve it quite so well as this night and Billy has some serious jazz chops going. Have you heard DP 25? Not really the best playing but it sounds as if the band is having a blast, one of my favorite dancin' in the streets. #34 and #11 have been gettin a lot of play lately as well...

haha. hell yea man that dancin is killer! I discovered it last year sometime and played it a lot. I love the laughter and vocal fun they have during it, but the jam is certainly no slacker. Unfortunately it has one of the lamest other ones I've ever heard. However the LIG is seriously good and well played, followed by a killer 78 style deal. I also like the CRS. A good release certainly.

DP 18 is my favorite and the biggest reason why is that 2/5/78, the 3rd disc was my first show, my wife's first show and my brother's first show and we still go to shows together 33 years later.

I have over half of them. 19 is my fav with 36 & 11 tied for second. Least is vol 9 MSG 9-16-90 listen to it you will know why. This summer I did make it through the whole show. With so much to choose it surprises me that this show got picked so early on.

Don't forget the fantastic Eyes!! Jerry blazes into Stella with some wicked, jazzed out leads, one of the very best Eyes transitions. I've underrated this pick in the past, shame on me!
